Odds Against McGregor as Mayweather Fight Draws Closer

Odds Against McGregor as Mayweather Fight Draws CloserDepending on who you talk to, the long-awaited clash between undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. and uber-popular MMA superstar Conor McGregor is either The Fight of the Millennium and an absolute can’t-miss, cross-discipline battle for the ages, or a quick, money-spinning, attention-grabbing media circus that is sure to end in farce.

Whatever side of the fence you sit on, there’s one thing we can all agree on:

Mayweather vs. McGregor is happening.

After months of speculation and rumour in the press, and months upon months of trash talking from both sides, it was recently announced that the fight will definitely take place next month, on Saturday, August 26th, 2017, live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For McGregor, the fight represents a seemingly insurmountable challenge, having his first ever boxing match against a man who retired from the sport undefeated, and is widely regarded as arguably the best defensive boxer of all time.

As such, it’s fair to say that the Irishman is far from the odds-on favourite.

Speaking to the Telegraph recently, Nick Bogdanovich of William Hill said that ‘Money’ Mayweather would be the 1/100 favourite if it wasn’t for the fact that they had to somehow come up with odds on McGregor somehow pulling a victory together.

Yet it isn’t just the odds themselves that show just how much Conor McGregor – one of the biggest stars in the UFC- is considered to be the underdog in this fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

With the fight now less than 50 days away, betting and odds for the Mayweather McGregor fight are available here, and reveal just how little a chance pundits expect Notorious to have when he steps in the ring on August 26th.

Odds on Winning

Not surprisingly, Mayweather is listed as the odds-on favourite for a flat out victory, coming in at 1/7 on William Hill, compared to 9/2 for the UFC star, and a 40/1 chance of the match being declared a drawer.

What is most telling though, is the bets that bookies re willing to take on McGregor being completely ineffective against his more experienced opponent.

Throwing in The Towel

One of the first bets bookies are offering is for Conor McGregor to land less than 44.5 punches in the whole fight, though even that doesn’t say as much about how little faith they have in him to win than the heavy odds of his camp calling the whole thing off.

At time of writing, sports betting sites were promoting the odds of Conor McGregor landing less than 20 punches before his corner throws in the towel. In other words, this is a bet for those who pretty much expect to see the MMA fighter get quickly and swiftly annihilated by the retired pro boxer.

Tellingly, there is no option to bet on the same thing happening to Mayweather Jr.

Similar bets tell the same story: For all intents and purposes, Mayweather is expected to practically walk his return match, whilst a victory for McGregor will be considered nothing short of a miracle.

So, whether it really is The Fight of the Century, or a simple money-grabbing media circus, one thing’s for sure, the odds will be heavily stacked against the Irish UFC star when he steps up against one of boxing’s all time greats inside a Las Vegas ring on August 26th.
