UFC 146: Dos Santos vs Mir Betting Odds

On May 26 2012 the UFC presents a super sized event with 10 Heavyweights making up the main card, including the UFC Heavyweight title on the line in the evenings headliner. Former champion Frank Mir was thrust into the role of title challenger following Alistair Overeem withdrawing from the fight. Opposing Mir, will be the current UFC champion, Brazilian knockout artist Junior Dos Santos.

  • JDS has been tearing through the competition; he has won 9 in a row including 8 straight inside the Octagon. During his impressive surge to the top of the division Junior has defeated top ranked heavyweights Fabricio Werdum, Shane Carwin, and most recently former champion Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos has recorded 10 of his 14 wins by knockout and is quickly gaining the reputation as the most feared striker in the 265 pound division. One area we have yet to set the Champ tested in is his ground game, partially because of his outstanding stand-up ability but more importantly because his opponent’s have been unable to but the Brazilian on his back.

Frank Mir will put JDS takedown defense and if things go right for the challenger, his submission defense to the test. Mir has won the majority of his fights by submission, including his most recent win, where he submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by arm breaking kimura. The win over Big Nog was Mir’s second, and only served to further fuel the fire between Mir and Junior Dos Santos who is a student of Nogueira.

It is believed that a Champion isn’t truly the champion until he has successfully defends his title at least once and Frank Mir is the perfect first opponent considering this will be the fifth time Mir has taken part in a UFC title fight.

UFC 146 Video Preview and Predictions

In the co-headliner, former champion Cain Velasquez attempts to get his career back on track after dropping the title when he battle former Strikeforce competitor Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva. Just like Cain, Silva is in need of a win in order to regroup from a first round knockout defeat against Daniel Cormier in the semi-finals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix. With Alistair Overeem out of the picture for the foreseeable future, the winner of this battle will move one step closer to a potential shot at UFC gold.

The main card will be finalized by another half dozen heavyweights; granite chinned Roy Nelson is set to lock horns with the unorthodox Dave Herman, Lavar ‘Big’ Johnson tries for three wins in a row stepping in on short notice to meet Stefan Struve, and a pair of undefeated fighters meet as the multi-dimensional Stipe Miocic welcomes another former Strikeforce fighter Shane Del Rosario.

The big boys might be dominating the event’s main card, but you can expect the smaller fighters will try to steal the show in the preliminary fights. On the FX prelims, Ultimate fighter winner Diego Brandao begins his post TUF career against Darren Elkins, dangerous Lightweight Edson Barboza meets former WEC champ Jamie Varner, Middleweights CB Dollaway and Jason Miller clash, and 170 pound strikers Dan Hardy and Duane Ludwig hook it up. Kick starting the evening on the Facebook portion of the undercard; Paul Sass tries to remain undefeated against Jacob Volkman, Glover Teixeira debuts against Kyle Kingsbury and Daniel Pineda and Mike Brown meet in a Featherweight showdown.

The Heavyweight division rankings are in for a shake up and with so many 265 pounders in action it is hard to believe we won’t see some big changes. UFC 146 is going to be a barn burner and if you like knockouts do not miss this card as heavyweight fights very rarely go the full three rounds.
