Kicking things off on Friday the Octagon returns to Sydney, Australia for UFC on FX 2: Alves vs Kampmann. The card will be headlined by a Welterweight clash between former title challenger Thiago ‘Pitbull’ Alves and the last man to defeat the current interim-Welterweight Champion Martin ‘The Hitman’ Kampmann. With Georges St-Pierre sidelined by injury both competitors see this fight as an opportunity to position themselves in the hunt to become the next title challenger and as a result this match-up has Fight of the Night potential written all over it.
Also on the card will be the debut of the UFC Flyweight division (125lbs) in the form of a tournament to crown the weightclasses first champion. In the opening round former Bantamweight title contender Demetrious Johnson welcomes current Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight champ Ian McCall to the Octagon. McCall is currently ranked as the #1 Flyweight in the world, but will face a stiff test against Johnson who could immediately position himself at the top of the rankings with a victory. On the other side of the bracket another former Bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez will meet Shooto 123 pound champ Yasuhiro Urushitani. Benavidez has been long considered the uncrowned Flyweight champion, but Urushitani (ranked #3 Flyweight) will put that theory to the test. The winners of these two bout will advance to the first ever UFC Flyweight Title fight at an event yet to be determined.
The rest of the UFC card is comprised of up and coming talent and battle tested veterans, including a Middleweight contest between Ultimate Fighter winner Court McGee and the hard hitting Constatinos Philippou. Make sure you mark this event on your calendar so you don’t miss UFC on FX 2, Friday March 2nd 2012.
UFC on FX & Strikeforce Preview and Predictions
If one event isn’t enough, Strikeforce returns to action with Strikeforce: Tate vs Rousey. Miesha Tate successfully wrestled the Bantamweight title away from former Champion Marloes Coenen with perfectly executed arm triangle choke. In he first title defense, Tate could be the one dodging submission attempts as 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze medalist Ronda Rousey brings her undefeated MMA record to challenge for the title. Rousey is a perfect 4-0 as a professional along with 3 more wins at the amateur level. Ronda has finished all of her fights by armbar submission and even more impressively she has yet to fight beyond the opening minute. Miesha Tate has a stiff test in front of her, but the veteran competitor has a tonne of experience and isn’t ready to relinquish her title to relative MMA rookie. These athletes will leave everything in the cage and promise to put on a show that even the most casual MMA fan will enjoy.
Josh Thomson and K.J. Noons will clash in a Lightweight battle with a shot at the champ, Gilbert Melendez, on the line. Both men have held gold before with Noons capturing the EliteXC Welterweight title and Thomson defeating Melendez earlier in his career to take hold of the Strikeforce title.
Also on the card, former Middleweight champ Jacare Souza returns to action, British basher Paul Daley meets Pride veteran Kazuo Misaki, and the always entertaining Scott Smith jumps back up to the middleweight division. Prior to the main card the televised prelims will be headlined by an interesting Lightweight battle between veteran Pat Healy and rising contender Caros Fodor.
