UFC 189 Lawler vs MacDonald | McGregor vs Mendes

This weekend starts off a very busy period for the UFC, we have a tonne of events coming up and this Saturday we have the biggest event of the year. UFC 189 Lawler vs MacDonald and McGregor vs Mendes. I cannot wait for this one. I was hoping that Aldo would not pull out, ive relocated to Brazil for a few months and brought my Irish flag, sadly I will not get to show it off, all the same I am really looking forward to this event. This is a huge card with some great fights and as always we have the odds and predictions.

UFC 189 Best Bets – Scott Jack

• Bet Conor McGregor -155 (Bet365) vs. Chad Mendes

This is a great line on Conor McGregor (17-2), but Chad Mendes (17-2) does present a different match-up entirely than Aldo would have. However, the Irishman will have a huge striking edge and 8” reach advantage.

Mendes is a solid wrestler, but he hasn’t been as dominant lately. McGregor still has never been taken down and he has displayed capable TDD when needed. McGregor may not KO Mendes early, but his power will win him this fight.

You can’t count Mendes out, though, he has only ever lost to Aldo in his fighting career.

• Bet Lawler vs. MacDonald O3.5 Rounds -185 (5Dimes)

Robbie Lawler (25-10) and Rory MacDonald (18-2) will be fighting for the welterweight title.

Lawler is 3-0 since his loss to Hendricks last year – his last two wins have come by 5-round decision. MacDonald is on a 3-fight winning streak since he lost to Lawler when these two first fought back in 2013.

MacDonald is actually the favorite in this fight, but my best bet is O3.5 rounds. MacDonald doesn’t exert much energy in the cage and can easily go five rounds with Lawler. I expect this fight to go the distance.

• Bet Dennis Bermudez -195 (BetOnline) vs. Jeremy Stephens

We’re not getting the best line on Dennis Bermudez (14-4), but he shouldn’t lose to Jeremy Stephens (23-11).

Stephens has never been able to get over that hump in the featherweight division and Bermudez is the better fighter in just about every category. Bermudez lands more strikes, takedowns and has been in better form.

Bermudez just lost to Lamas, but Stephens has lost two in a row to Swanson and Oliveira. Bermudez is weak against submission specialists, but Stephens is known for his power and not his ability to submit opponents.

• Bet Gunnar Nelson +164 (5 Dimes) vs. Brandon Thatch

I’ve been back and forth on this fight all week and I’ll probably end up disappointed I didn’t stick with my initial gut feeling. I liked Brandon Thatch (11-2) at first, but I’ve decided to bet on Gunnar Nelson (13-1-1).

Nelson is 26 years old and about to enter his prime in the UFC. Thatch is already 29 and he just lost by submission against Henderson. Nelson is lethal at submissions as well. Three of Nelson’s four UFC wins have been by sub.

Thatch will be weary of being tapped out, but I still believe Nelson has the ability to finish this fight.

Thomas Almeida (18-0) is fighting Brad Pickett (24-10) in the first fight on the main card. Almeida is a big favorite and will dominate. My UFC 189 parlay includes Almeida, McGregor and Bermudez (+165 Odds) at Pinnacle.
