UFC 137 Preview & Video Predictions

October 29th, 2011 will mark the UFC return of Nick Diaz as he battles former UFC Welterweight and Lightweight champion BJ The Prodigy Penn in the main event of UFC 137.

From ’03 to ’06 Diaz compiled a 6-4 record in the UFC, earning notable wins over Robbie Lawler, Josh Neer, and Gleison Tibau. Since his departure from the company he has gone 11-1-1, 6-0 in Strikeforce with 5 finishes, capturing the Strikeforce Welterweight title and defending it on 3 occasions.

BJ Penn will be looking to rebound from a draw against perennial welterweight contender Jon Fitch. Penn won the opening two rounds, but was thoroughly dominated in the third resulting in a 10-8 on the scorecards and a draw. Prior to the Fitch fight, the Prodigy made an explosive return to the 170 pound division, knocking out the former champion Matt Hughes in 21 seconds.

Head to head, Penn and Diaz match up incredibly well and should provide an entertaining fight. Both competitors are well rounded with effective, yet vastly different striking styles and equally solid submissions skills, and each man is a proven finisher with a combine 34 finishes.

In the co main event of the evening Matt Mitrione will endeavor to continue is climb up the heavyweight rankings as he takes on UFC veteran Cheick Kongo. Mitrione has fought all 5 of his professional bouts inside the octagon compiling an undefeated record with 4 knockouts, while Kongo will be making his 15th appearance under the UFC banner with a 9-4-1 record.

Both men last appeared at UFC Live: Kongo vs Barry in June; Mitrione’s had a dominant performance earning a late second round TKO victory over Christian Morecraft while Cheick Kongo defeated Pat Berry via first round knockout in a fight many believe will go down as one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Despite the fact neither Mitrione and Kongo carry the main event hype of a Brock Lesnar or a George St-Pierre, both are talented strikers with explosive power which will make for an exciting heavyweight slugfest.
